• Mac DeMarco

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mac DeMarco. I don’t know, does this guy need any presentation? Or was it just me who heard about him only recently? Anyway, he is an indie musician. Good one. Really creative. And from what I learned about him, he got famous not so long ago. Perhaps thanks to the meme Garbage Funk. Perhaps due to something else. I’m not sure. Never investigated this topic to come up with a decent conclusion. But, to be honest, it doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter at all.

What matters – I dig his music. It all started with this meme Garbage Funk. The one where in a short video, maybe ten seconds long or so, he turns on his track and says along the lines something like It’s garbage, but it’s fun to make. Well, as they say – one man’s garbage is another’s treasure. I googled this song, and to me, it was a treasure.

I decided to check out a little bit more. To see what else DeMarco did and stumbled on his Bandcamp page. Chose the latest album One Wayne G. And right till today, I’m still under the impression. The guy just uploaded 199 tracks. Yep, his latest album is 199 tracks, and so far, all of them are good. I mean, they are not your usual music. It’s rather some kind of weird jazz-funk-fusion-jingle sort of thing. DeMarco characterizes himself in the genre as jizz-jazz.

I went on YouTube to check out maybe there are some interviews with him. Just to understand what kind of guy this Mac DeMarco is to release something this crazy and bold. I mean, the guy definitely couldn’t give two shits about the music industry and all that crap. And well, when I found his interview where he talks about his recent album, my suspicions were confirmed. In the age when for one short TikTok song there are over 9,000 writers, there’s a guy who releases an album with 199 songs where there’s only one writer. That’s. Just. Epic. I love this album. And I appreciate this guy’s approach.

All of a sudden, in the world of strange tendencies, there’s a guy who plays music he likes, the way he likes, the way he wants, and doesn’t give a shit or two about trends or all this popularity contest. And to be serious for a second, I know I’m saying that the only band I’m listening to is Nickelback. Well, Nickelback is one of the bands I’m listening to. There are others. And back to DeMarco. The biggest thing that blew my mind was that he’s kind of become famous. I mean, I bet there are thousands of guys who are playing music on their own terms, but they never get any publicity. Usually, all those big and popular magazines The Rolling Stones would just go with someone recognizable. Preferably if he was already old back in the 80s. The fact that he doesn’t take himself too seriously is also a big selling point for me.

Now, I know that maybe I’m far from the genre, and there are thousands of cool musicians who create music like that, but for me, DeMarco’s music was sort of breath of fresh air. Almost like a slurp-core from the Cruelty Squad (I’ll write about it a bit later). But right now, I’m planning to listen through the whole album, and I bet I’m going to enjoy it all. So, yeah, this is what I wanted to say.
